The Satellite Fire Base from Muraco is a portable fire pit designed from the ground up with a new approach to structure and stability. Its unique folding system, developed through precision machining, allows for compact storage, fast setup, and secure use even in windy conditions or when burning larger logs. Balancing portability with rigidity, it offers a refined solution for campfires without compromising ground clearance or performance.

Optional Grill Grate

An optional stainless steel grate turns the Satellite Fire Base into a functional grill. Thick 5mm wire construction handles cookware with ease and cleans up quickly after use.

Optional Spark Mat

The optional spark mat protects ground surfaces from heat and ember damage. Made from carbonized acrylic fiber, it was adapted from industrial welding use for fire-resistant performance.

Intentional Weight for Stability

Weighing approximately 3.7lbs, the Satellite Fire Base is intentionally heavy. Its low center of gravity ensures stability—even in wind or when the fire burns low.

Folding Mechanism

The fire base folds into a 3in-wide cylinder for compact transport. Setup is intuitive: loosen the bolts, fan out the legs and arms, and re-tighten to lock into place.

It Started with a Spark

The idea for the Satellite Fire Base began not from a design brief, but from a shift in perspective. For a long time, the founder of Muraco didn’t find campfires compelling—especially when camping alone. That changed after meeting Ino, the president of the Japan Bonfire Association. His approach to fire-building introduced a new way of seeing the practice: not just as warmth, but as a ritual. The quiet joy of splitting firewood. The flicker of flame in silence. A dog resting nearby. The emotional weight of the scene lingered.

From the Ground Up

Muraco combined its in-house cutting expertise with precision sheet metal processing from a partner factory. The goal was to design a compact fire pit with fully integrated parts, minimizing separation during transport and use.

Early concepts based solely on sheet metal processing would have mirrored existing products and failed to take advantage of Muraco’s machining capabilities. This led to a pivot—designing a cylindrical housing from which the arms and legs could extend. Initial sketches explored using 10mm aluminum pipes for the structure, but meeting stability and integration requirements proved difficult.

Designers sketched variations of arm and leg shapes, along with housing configurations, in search of a form that could remain unified and stable without sacrificing portability. The result is a structure that balances ease of storage, strength in use, and Muraco’s hallmark machining precision.

Like a knife

The design of the Satellite Fire Base began with a moment of curiosity. While handling a Victorinox multi-tool at home, the designer noticed the way its blade-like tools fanned out from the body. That movement—compact when closed, expansive when opened—inspired the structure of the fire base.

Sketches followed. By translating that same pivoting action into the arms and legs of a fire pit, the design began to take shape. The goal was a stable footprint, intuitive folding, and a natural fit into its housing when packed. This concept would go on to define the Satellite Fire Base's signature unfolding structure.
