Layout System Simulation Board

Released in 1992, the Snow Peak Layout System Simulation board is not just a moderately interesting piece of ephemera, but a window to the introduction of car camping to Japan and the rise of Snow Peak's modularity.

Customers would purchase a copy of the Simulation Board, go home and using the peel-and-stick pieces lay out their ideal campsite. Then, returning to the store, the customer would work with the sales rep to finalize the design. They would be able to purchase their campsite there on the spot, or place an order for home delivery.

This model not only allowed for guided autonomy, but for people to understand how the Layout System worked and the benefits it offered.

The Layout System Simulation Board was recreated in 2023 for Snow Peak Way West.

    The Perfect Spot

One of the primary components of the Simulation Board was the cover and campsite map. Drawn as a microcosm of any given campsite with a beach area, field and forest, it's design allowed for customers to imagine themselves in the spaces they were most familiar with. It performed double duty by folding up, protecting the cling-on pieces inside.

    The Full Catalog

Including with your Simulation Board were four sheets of cling-on-film camp pieces. Each showcased a different part of the catalog, and included various cars and other camp accessories that were similar to what others were using at the time. By using a cling instead of a paper sticker, users could reposition and easily layer pieces, then remove them and save each one for later.

    A Case for Carrying

All of the included components fold inside the map/shell like a Pee Chee folder - allowing for easy storage and security of your latout.
