The Amano Kebari is the sole pattern used by Mr. Katsutoshi Amano, one of Japan’s most recognized tenkara anglers. Like many tenkara masters, Mr. Amano fills his fly box with a single design—same size, same color—relying on technique rather than variation.
Tied in the sakasa style, the Amano Kebari is fished subsurface, where the hackle opens and closes with movement. Mr. Amano’s preferred method is to cast slightly upstream and pulse the fly in a four-count rhythm as it drifts. When worked in this way, the fly responds with lifelike motion that draws strikes in a wide range of conditions.
