Tippet is the clear line tied between the main tenkara line and the fly. Tenkara USA carries 5X nylon tippet, equivalent to approximately 5 lb (2.5 kg) test strength. This size balances strength and breakaway safety, reducing the chance of rod damage if the fly becomes snagged.

Most tenkara setups use 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 m) of tippet, with 4 feet (1.2 m) being a common starting point. Longer lengths may be helpful in calm or clear water.
