Shio Koshō Kebari (Size 14 / 3 Flies)
The Shio Koshō Kebari is a two-tone fly developed by TJ of Tenkara USA and tied in the traditional sakasa (reverse hackle) style. Built on a scud-style hook, it uses black and white thread along with matching feathers to create contrast in the water. The design was based on a need for better visibility when fishing subsurface.
White thread near the eye of the hook improves tracking as the fly rises, while the black thread behind the hackle offers a darker profile. This combination provides a balanced presentation that works across varying light conditions and fish preferences.
Since 2010, TJ has relied exclusively on this pattern, using it in different sizes depending on the stream and season. It remains the only fly he carries.
